  CAPABILITY STATEMENTCaritas Bo is a reliable, accountable and competent partner with technical capacity to handle multiple grants, meet donor demands and deliver on commitments to target communities.
Brief Background on Caritas Sierra Leone BoCaritas Sierra Leone Bo is a chapter of Caritas Sierra Leone and part of the Caritas Internationalis. It serves as the Catholic Church’s relief and development arm in Sierra Leone. It specifically operates in the southern region of Sierra Leone and is dedicated to eradicating extreme poverty, promoting social justice, and restoring human dignity in the catchment locations.

Caritas Sierra Leone Bo has been involved in various initiatives and projects aimed at addressing issues such as poverty, corruption, injustice, equality, good governance, peace, human rights, women’s empowerment, youth empowerment, disabled persons’ empowerment, livelihoods, relief efforts, rehabilitation programs, and health system strengthening.

Established as part of the Archdiocesan Development Office (ADO) under the mandate of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Sierra Leone, Caritas Sierra Leone Bo has been actively working towards holistic human development since its inception in 2011. The organization collaborates with local communities, government entities, international partners, and other stakeholders to enhance livelihoods and empower communities to address their own challenges effectively.

As a faith-based national non-governmental organization (NNGO), Caritas Sierra Leone Bo’s mission is rooted in the Catholic Social Teaching and the principles of love, compassion, and solidarity. The organization seeks to serve all people, regardless of their religious affiliation or ethnic background, age, sex, race and gender.

Caritas Sierra Leone Bo’s work is guided by the Sierra Leone’s Mid-term National Development Plan 2024 – 2030 with the Big Five’s Game Changer, that is (Agriculture – Feed Salone, Human Capital Development, Youth Employment, Technology & Infrastructure and Transforming the Public Service Architecture – Education) and  United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

Caritas Sierra Leone Bo’s programs cover a wide range of sectors, including food security and agriculture, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), education, health care, youth and women empowerment, microfinance, and emergency response. The organization works in close collaboration with local communities and partners to ensure that its interventions are sustainable and effective.

Caritas Sierra Leone Bo has offices in various parts of the Southern Region of Sierra Leone, including Bo, Bonthe, Moyamba and Pujehun districts.

Core CompetenciesCore Competencies: Caritas Sierra Leone  Bo implements human interest driven programmes in response to the needs of vulnerable communities. We focus on health, food security and Nutrition, Child Protection , Education, School Feeding , Midwifery Education , Peacebuilding and Livelihoods and other emergencies. We are very competent  in community engagement, social mobilization,  participatory advocacy,  strong lobbying and networking skills, results-based  programme management and a permanent presence in the entire southern region of Sierra Leone.

“CSL’s mission is to empower men, women and children to fight poverty, social injustice, through advocacy, social mobilization and through provision of services for long-term development for vulnerable communities based on the Catholic Social teachings.”

Financial Capacity” Caritas Sierra Leone Bo has a sound financial system which guarantees transparent and accountable use of resources. We use QuickBooks software  system  with a web-based backup system for effective  financial data security.  Our books  are audited by external auditors on an annual basis.  We make  public our  financial statements  We manage an annual funding basket of approximately  1.5 million USD.

The strategic objectives of Caritas Sierra Leone Bo include:

  • Poverty Alleviation: Implementing programs that provide immediate relief to those in need while also focusing on long-term solutions that address the root causes of poverty.
  • Education Enhancement: Promoting access to quality education for children and adults alike, ensuring that educational opportunities are available to all segments of society.
  • Healthcare Improvement: Providing essential health services and promoting health awareness within communities to combat diseases and improve overall health outcomes.
  • Community Development: Fostering community engagement through participatory approaches that empower local populations to take charge of their development processes.
  • Advocacy for Social Justice: Engaging in advocacy efforts aimed at influencing policy changes that benefit marginalized groups and promote equitable resource distribution.
Governance Structure of Caritas Sierra Leone:Caritas Sierra Leone Bo operates with a structured governance system to oversee its operations and initiatives in the Southern Region of Sierra Leone. The governance structure of Caritas Sierra Leone Bo includes the following key components:

  • Advisory Board: The Advisory Board is responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight to Caritas Sierra Leone Bo. They play a crucial role in decision-making, policy formulation, and ensuring that the organization’s activities align with its mission and vision.
  • Management Team: The Management Team consists of Director, Technical heads and managers who are responsible for the day-to-day operations of Caritas Sierra Leone Bo. They implement the strategies set by the Board of Directors, manage programs and projects, and ensure efficient functioning of the organization.
  • Personnel: Caritas Sierra Leone has over 20 personnel working across the Southern Region of Sierra Leone to support its various initiatives and programs. These personnel are involved in different capacities, including program implementation, administration, coordination, and outreach activities.
  • Partnerships: Caritas Sierra Leone collaborates with various partners at local, national, and international levels to enhance its impact and reach. Partnerships with organizations such as Catholic Relief Services USA, Action Medeor, Kindermissonwerk, BMZ, FAO, UNFPA, WHO, WHO, UNICEF, UNPBF, Manos Unidas, Caritas Ireland-Trócaire, Caritas England and Wales-CAFOD, Caritas Internationalis, and other Caritas entities enable Caritas Sierra Leone Bo to leverage resources and expertise for its projects.
  • Diocesan Offices: In addition to the National Office in Freetown, Caritas Sierra Leone Bo operates through four Diocesan offices across the country. These regional offices help in decentralizing operations, engaging with local communities, and tailoring interventions to specific needs at the grassroots level.

We do not parshute, our community engagement approach ensures that our staff live in the target communities.
